MIT 257 Health Requirements

For those taking the clinical course, MIT 257, students must submit documentation of health requirements to the electronic documentation by the required deadline. Failure to submit the documentation by the deadline will result in a student being denied access to clinical rotations. All health requirement costs are the responsibility of the student.

  1. Physical Examination – yearly
  2. PPD – Tuberculosis skin testing – yearly
  3. Flu vaccination – yearly
  4. COVID-19 vaccination – medical or religious exemption may be accepted, but may limit clinical site placement.
  5. Students must submit documentation of:
    • Immunity to rubella, rubeola,  and varicella.
    • Hepatitis B series of 3 immunizations. Students are responsible for submitting the date of each of the 3 immunizations as soon as each dose is administered to ensure that the series is completed in the proper time frame. There should be no more or no less than 1 month between the first and second injections and no more or no less than 5 months between the second and third injections. Failure to adhere to the required time frame for each immunization may result in additional lab testing, and in some cases, restarting the entire immunization series. Students who do not receive the series must sign a waiver form, have a Hepatitis Surface antigen test yearly and submit the results to the Radiologic Technology department.
    • Hepatitis B surface antibody or surface antigen.
    • Tetanus/diphtheria Immunization within 10 years
    • Measles/mumps/rubella dates of 2 immunizations after the age of 1 year. However, if rubella and rubeola titers are positive for immunity, 2 dates are not required.
  6. Students may be required to submit a 10-panel drug test. This is dependent upon clinical placement. Students will be informed by the clinical education coordinator if this is required.
  7. Health insurance – per our clinical affiliations students are required to provide proof of health insurance to the clinical site.

MIT 257 American Heart Association – CPR

Successful completion of the American Heart Association CPR certification is a required prerequisite to the clinical course.

Licensure/Clinical Agency Requirements/Background Check

All students entering the Mammography clinical are required to have completed a background check through the Department of Public Safety at Owens Community College or Viewpoint. Students may be required to have additional background checks as requested by a clinical site.

Students shall be aware that a criminal record may jeopardize licensure by the State certification body. Likewise, host clinical sites require a criminal background check and may require fingerprinting and/or drug screening. The clinical site reserves the right to accept or refuse the student depending on the results of such checks and screens. Depending on the infraction, clinical placement may not be possible, even if the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the American Registry of Technologists clears the student for credentialing purposes.

Anytime a background check is returned with a conviction of a misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, and/or felony, or plea of solo contendere, withheld or deferred adjudication, suspended or stay of sentence or military court-martial, students will be required to submit a pre-application review to the American Association of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within two weeks. Those students affected will be required to submit documentation from the ARRT to the Radiologic Technology Department indicating that they have been cleared to take the certification exam upon graduation.

The medical imaging department administrator at the clinical affiliates will be contacted regarding a conviction. The clinical affiliate reserves the right to accept or refuse the student. Depending on the results, clinical placement may not be possible, even if the ARRT clears the student for credentialing purposes.

Background checks by the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCI & I) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are required. The student assumes the cost of the background checks.

Work Environment

Mammographers provide services that require touching patients for positioning purposes and performing venipuncture. This environment puts them in contact with blood and body fluids. Diseases may be encountered in this type of environment. However, research shows that risks are negligible when appropriate infection control procedures/barrier techniques are used. Upon entering the program, there is training to meet the protocol for a hazard-free, safe learning environment.

Course Progression/Completion Requirements

All students enrolled in the Mammography Certificate Program must achieve a “C” or better in all program courses to earn the certificate.  A student who fails to achieve a grade of “C” or better in any course within the plan of study must retake the course and earn a “C” or better. Both courses require completion with a “C” or better to earn the certificate.

The grading scale for the program courses is:
Numerical Grade Letter Grade
93 – 100%  A
85 – 92%  B
76 – 84%  C
60- 75%  D
59% or below F

MIT 257 Clinical experiences/affiliations

Students are required to earn clinical competencies to take the ARRT Mammography certification examination. MIT 257 is offered for students to earn competencies. Students may take more than one MIT 257 course to complete their requirements. If interested in taking this course, students should contact the program director.

Students will attend a hospital orientation in their assigned clinical site the week prior to beginning the MIT 257 clinical course. Students will attend a minimum of 8 hours per week in the clinical. All clinical time will be scheduled with the assigned clinical preceptor.

Attendance requirements are in place and any missed time must be made up as soon as possible or over the semester break. Students will not be permitted to attend clinical education for more than 12 hours per day or schedule make-up time on holidays.  Students should note that there may be the need for travel up to and including 60 miles from the Owens State Community College Toledo-area Campus for their clinical site rotations.
