Owens Community College has helped power the economy of northwest Ohio the past 60 years by preparing students for careers, building strong community partnerships and creating pathways to success. Opening in 1965 with approximately 200 students, Owens has grown into one of the region’s most trusted and accessible higher education institutions, evidenced by the more than 500,000 credit students who have taken classes.
Originally part of Penta County Technical Institute, Owens became an independent college in 1970 and was renamed Michael J. Owens Technical College in 1972, honoring the inventor who revolutionized glass manufacturing. That same year, College Hall opened—signaling the start of a future defined by growth, innovation and service. The name change to Owens Community College was completed in 1994, when Owens began offering arts and sciences classes and the first two years of a bachelor’s degree.
Today, under the leadership of President Dr. Dione D. Somerville, Owens offers high-quality education with programs aligned to real-world jobs and employer needs. From skilled trades and healthcare to business, public service and transfer degrees, students at Owens gain the tools they need to succeed in school, in work and in life.
Owens is known for its strong partnerships with regional employers. Innovation is built into Owens’ academic approach. A few highlights include the Healthcare Education Center, which prepares tomorrow’s healthcare workers today, including the region’s finest nurses, as well as the Center for Emergency Preparedness, with its focus on first responder training. And thanks to transfer agreements with schools like Bowling Green State University, the University of Toledo and many more, students can start at Owens and finish at a four-year college—saving time and money on their education.
On campuses in Perrysburg and Findlay, Owens has continued to increase its investment in the whole student with a full suite of wraparound services—including academic advising, free tutoring, mental health support, child care assistance, food pantry and career services. By removing barriers, Owens helps students stay on track. Beyond academics, Owens Express athletics brings pride to campus with a history of excellence, including three national championships in women’s volleyball among the six national titles captured by Owens Express teams through the years.
As Owens celebrates its 60th anniversary, its mission remains clear: deliver life-changing education, build stronger communities and prepare tomorrow’s workforce. From humble beginnings to regional leadership, Owens Community College is where success begins.
