Interprofessional Education (IPE) Core Competencies

The competencies listed were developed through the review of published materials made available by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative:

  1. Develop knowledge of health professions other than your own: Observe skills, abilities and experiences of other professions in a clinical setting.
  2. Plan informed care decisions: Develop treatment based on evidence and experience.
  3. Describe safe care: Delineate a care plan that ensures safety and well-being.
  4. Recognize ethical care: Employ the special attention needed in decision-making while maintaining confidentiality.
  5. Identify timely care: Develop the ability to quickly provide care after recognizing a need.
  6. Articulate efficient care: Communicate care that is optimally productive with consideration of inputs such as cost, time, or materials.
  7. Differentiate unique cultures and values: Develop a world-view of healthcare by understanding and appreciating unique cultures and values.
  8. Evaluate roles and responsibilities: Assess how a role defines one’s relationship in an interdisciplinary team compared to responsibilities of team members as a result of that role.
  9. Assess expertise: Analyze how an IPE team can work together to recognize expertise given toward the combined application of study and experience.
  10. Identify effective communication: Acknowledge the emotion and intention behind the information.
