One Course Changed Everything for Cassandra Meggitt, Now She’s Finally Getting Her Moment
Cassandra Meggitt was certain she wanted to spend her life helping people, but she wasn’t sure what that looked like until she took an Interprofessional Education (IPE) course at Owens Community College and found the field of surgical technology.
This May, Meggitt will graduate with her Associate Degree in Surgical Technology while also being honored as an outstanding graduate in the program.
“I took the IPE course here and realized that surgical technology was something that I would probably enjoy,” Meggitt said. “It is very much a ‘background’ type of career in which I didn’t even know that this was a thing until I took that course. I believe that this is what I was made to do with my life.”
Meggitt had taken a few years after graduating from Clyde High School in 2020 to figure out what was next for her.
She credited her friends and family for the positive impact they’ve made on her success, giving her the confidence and support she needed when returning to school.
Like thousands of students in 2020, Meggitt didn’t have the traditional graduation ceremony after high school, which will make her experience of walking across the stage at the Owens commencement an even more significant event.
“I think that being able to walk across the stage and say I graduated will be the biggest moment to me. After not really having a high school graduation, this is a huge accomplishment for me since I didn’t think I’d go back to school after my gap years,” she said.
After graduation, Meggitt will work as a surgical technologist at Firelands Health The Bellevue Hospital.
