Outstanding Radiologic Technology Graduate Morgan McMillin Persevered Through Unimaginable Loss
Toward the end of her first semester at Owens Community College, Morgan McMillin and her family experienced a devastating loss in December 2023, when her sister and her sister’s fiancé were killed in a car accident. Six months before she was to begin the Radiologic Technology program, McMillin had to navigate that tremendous loss and help care for her young nephew on top of schoolwork.
She pushed through and will graduate in May with her Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology while also being named the program’s outstanding graduate.
“Learning to navigate that loss while entering a highly demanding program became the greatest challenge I have faced. Balancing my academic responsibilities while also helping to care for my nephew was never something I had planned, but with hard work, consistency and the support of friends and family, I persevered,” McMillin said.
McMillin’s path to Owens started before graduating from Eastwood High School in 2023. She was exploring options that would allow her to help others without requiring more than four years of study. Owens was the right choice, according to McMillin, due to the affordable opportunity to earn her associate degree while remaining close to home.
She credited the entire community at Owens and beyond for their support.
“I had the opportunity to play volleyball in my first year, complete clinicals at a Level I trauma hospital and build meaningful friendships along the way,” McMillin said. “My instructors and clinical faculty each made a lasting impact as I progressed, and every person I worked with contributed valuable knowledge — not only in X-ray, but also in helping me grow as an individual.”
After graduation, McMillin will take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam before beginning her career in X-ray and computed tomography
