After Losing His Mother to Cancer, Outstanding Graduate Stephen Farkas Found His Calling in Nursing
When Stephen Farkas’ mother passed away in March 2022 after a battle with cancer, he couldn’t return to his previous life in the skilled trades as a welder. Too much had happened to change Farkas.
Farkas spent six months learning everything he could about oncology and healthcare to help care for his mother. He decided to continue that path and extend his care to other patients in need.
He will graduate in May with his Associate of Applied Science in Registered Nursing (RN) from Owens Community College. Farkas was also named a recipient of the Barbara Rood Student Choice Award as an outstanding graduate in the program.
This is Farkas’ second degree from Owens after receiving his Associate of Applied Science in Welding in 2012.
“Owens has been phenomenal and integral in providing my education, both times I attended. The entire nursing staff has helped and guided me through this journey,” he said.
He admitted it’s been a difficult journey for him, saying that nursing has been a “180-degree difference from skilled trades.” However, he’s succeeded thanks to the motivation and support from his family, friends and peers at Owens.
“The nursing program is not easy, and it really shows what you are made of,” Farkas, of Woodville, said. “I’m extremely proud of everyone else that will walk the aisle with me on graduation day.”
After graduation, Farkas will work at Toledo Hospital on the neurology floor with a plan to eventually transition to oncology, ICU or hospice.
