Indigenous Peoples’ Day Event with The BIG Read
October 14, 2026 | 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Join us for a powerful BIG Read conversation exploring climate change, inequity and resilience through Indigenous perspectives.
Two speakers from the Ojibwe community in northern Michigan will share personal experiences, cultural perspectives and insights into the ways climate change affects Indigenous communities. The discussion will consider how environmental change intersects with history, culture, land, water and community—and why the effects of climate change are not experienced equally.
The speakers will also explore Indigenous approaches to resilience, responsibility and relationships with the natural world, including the importance of community knowledge and thinking about future generations.
Connected to this year’s BIG Read theme, Resilience, Imagination, and Responsibility: What Do We Do Now?, this event asks us to think beyond climate change as simply an environmental issue. It is also an issue of justice, culture, responsibility and community.
Most importantly, the conversation will return to the question at the heart of this year’s BIG Read:
What can one person actually do?
