Become an expert in the scientific principles of human physiology. Owens’ Exercise Science Concentration, AS is your fast-track into the fitness industry as a personal trainer, fitness instructor or sports coach.
Enjoy the flexibility of working independently, developing your own programs and building client relationships. As an exercise science professional, you’ll evaluate health behaviors and risk factors, conduct fitness assessments and motivate individuals to lead healthier lives.

Human Performance Track
In two years, you’ll build a comprehensive foundation in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology—the science of human movement—learning how muscles, bones and joints work together. As you progress, you’ll explore the body’s physiological responses to exercise, gaining practical skills in fitness assessment, program design and athletic training.
Your studies will include nutrition, human behavior and personal wellness. Arts and humanities electives ensure a well-rounded education.
In your final semester, you’ll apply theory to practice through a hands-on practicum and capstone project, gaining real-world experience that prepares you for careers in fitness, wellness or advanced study.

- Integrate physiological or psychological principles and strategies of physical fitness to effectively support clients in achieving behaviors for optimal health and wellness.

- Design evidence-based exercise training programs utilizing various types of training modalities.
Career Outcomes
As a graduate, you’ll work as a fitness coach, personal trainer or aerobics instructor—empowering clients to achieve their health and fitness goals.
This program prepares you to transfer seamlessly to four-year colleges or universities for a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, sports management, exercise physiology or kinesiology. You can then pursue graduate programs in high-demand fields like occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Getting Started at Owens

Enrollment is easy—just fill out an online admissions application to get started. We’ll ask you to submit your transcripts for course placement and college credit.
Upon acceptance, schedule a meeting with your admissions advisor to register for classes. Next, attend an on-campus orientation and meet with your student financial services advisor to discuss ways to pay for college.
NSCA Education Recognition Program (ERP)
The Personal Training Program at Owens Community College has met the criteria as an approved and recognized program through the NSCA Education Recognition Program (ERP). This program recognition is valid for a three-year period, through September 30, 2027. Program approval through the NSCA ERP does not constitute nor imply accreditation through the CASCE.
