Federal Work-Study
Looking for a way to earn money while in school? The Federal Work-Study program at Owens Community College offers part-time jobs for students with financial need. Work on campus or at approved off-campus sites and use your earnings to help pay for college expenses.
How the Program Works
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federally-funded program of part-time employment for students with financial need. This program allows you to earn money to help pay for your educational expenses. The number of hours worked is determined by need, up to a maximum of 24 hours per week.
Receiving Work-Study aid depends on securing a student employee position in various campus departments or at an off-campus location.
The Office of Financial Aid determines eligibility in accordance with federal guidelines. Funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Annual award amount
The annual award amount varies based on eligibility.
Enrollment required
You must be registered for 6 or more credit hours in two of the three semesters each academic year. You can request a “Free Semester,” which allows you to enroll in fewer than 6 credit hours and continue working as a Student Employee for one semester during the academic year.
The academic year begins with the summer semester and ends with the spring semester. If your “Free Semester” is summer, you do not have to be registered for summer, as long as you are already registered for at least 6 credit hours for the fall semester.
If your “Free Semester” is in either fall or spring, you must be registered for at least 3 credit hours. To use this option, email the Student Employment team from your Owens email account and state which semester you would like to use as your “Free Semester.”
How to apply
To apply for a Work-Study position, you’ll need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) as early as possible; funds are limited.
To be considered for a specific Work-Study position, apply for the positions in which you are interested and contact Student Employment to inquire about eligibility for Federal Work-Study.
