When you think of someone staying in the “family business,” you might not think of teaching. Allison Gomez, this year’s education outstanding graduate, is following in her mother’s footsteps and becoming a teacher.

Gomez’s road to teaching started by watching her mother in the classroom and seeing her love for teaching children. “She always used to tell me being a teacher is a tough job but the most rewarding job,” Gomez said. Now, as a mother herself, Gomez said watching her children grow and develop has been an amazing feeling. “In choosing this field, I will not only watch but be a part of children’s growth and learning.”

The first time Gomez, a Woodmore graduate, walked through the halls at Owens, she felt comfortable and knew this was home. “I am 30 years old, I was worried about being too old. That didn’t matter here,” she said. During her time at Owens, Gomez said the experience of the faculty made her time successful. “Every faculty member I had the opportunity to meet with was personable and professional. I truly couldn’t have done it without them.”

After graduation, Gomez plans to look for a lead teacher position in a childcare setting or a paraprofessional position in the public-school system. She eventually wants to return to school to pursue her bachelor’s degree.
