Grants


A grant is financial aid that is generally based on financial need. You do not have to pay back grants as long as you complete the semester. Each grant has certain eligibility requirements, in addition to the general Eligibility Requirements for aid. If you already have a bachelor’s degree, you are not eligible for any of the grant programs listed.

The grant programs available at Owens Community College are:

Federal Pell Grant
  • Need-based
  • Eligibility is primarily based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

You are eligible for the maximum Pell grant if you have a Pell-eligible EFC and meet the following criteria:

  • Your parent or guardian was a member of the Armed Forces and died as a result of performing military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after 9/11/2001; or was actively serving as a police officer, firefighter, or other public safety officer and died in the line of duty*
    and
  • You were under the age of 24 years, or were enrolled at least half-time in college, at the time of your parent or guardian’s death
2023-2024 (Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024) annual award amount: $7,395.

If you are enrolled summer, fall, and at least half-time in spring, your annual amount may be increased by up to 50%.

Enrollment required: For full eligibility, a minimum of 12 credit hours is required each semester, including summer. Amounts are pro-rated if you are enrolled in less than 12 credits.

Length of eligibility: Maximum of 12 full-time semesters

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
  • Funds are very limited. Apply early.
  • You must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and have exceptional financial need to qualify.
    Students with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC) receive first priority.
Annual award amount: Up to $600

Enrollment required: 1 or more credit hours

Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant
You may qualify for this grant if all of the following apply:

  • Your parent or guardian was a member of the Armed Forces and died as a result of performing military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after 9/11/2001
  • You were under the age of 24 years, or were enrolled at least half-time in college, at the time of your parent or guardian’s death
  • Your EFC is above the limit for Federal Pell Grant eligibility
2023-2024 (Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024) annual award amount: $6,973

If you are enrolled summer, fall, and at least half-time in spring, your annual amount may be increased by up to 50%.

Enrollment required: For full eligibility, a minimum of 12 credit hours is required each semester, including summer. Amounts are pro-rated if you are enrolled in less than 12 credits.

Length of eligibility: Maximum of 12 full-time semesters

Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) for Year-round Students (Spring semester only)
  • You must be an Ohio resident with an EFC of 3750 or less and a household income of $96,000 or less to be considered
  • You must meet all state and federal aid eligibility requirements and have received the Federal Pell Grant for summer and fall semesters. This grant will supplement any remaining Pell funds for those students who are unable to receive spring semester Pell grant funds because they are enrolled below half-time or have reached the 12-semester Pell limit.
Spring 2024 amount: up to $1600

Enrollment required: To be considered for full eligibility, a minimum of 12 credit hours is required. Amounts are pro-rated if you are enrolled in less than 12 credits

Length of eligibility: Maximum of 10 full-time semesters

Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) for Veterans and Foster Youth
  • Veterans must be using Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty) or Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill®) benefits as certified by the Owens Office of Veterans Services.
  • Foster youth must present an Ohio ETV Program approval letter to the Student Service Center, after which the College must confirm the student’s eligibility with the State of Ohio
  • You must be an Ohio resident with an EFC of 3750 or less and a household income of $96,000 or less to be considered
2023-2024 (Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024) annual award amount: up to $1600 per semester

Awards may be used to help with tuition and living expenses

Enrollment required: For full eligibility, a minimum of 12 credit hours is required each semester, including summer. Amounts are pro-rated if you are enrolled less than 12 credits

Length of eligibility: Maximum of 10 full-time semesters
