Throughout a student’s journey at Owens Community College, there are many opportunities to get involved not only on campus, but through educational organizations for future careers. For Jennifer Martin, she has been recognized by the Board of Trustees for her community engagement and involvement with the Society of Vascular Ultrasound (SVU).

Martin is a returning student to Owens. She attended Owens in the 1990s then got married, started a family and began working full time. When her children were in high school, she wanted to complete her degree and set a good example for them. Martin knew returning to Owens to complete her education was the right decision for her future. “With being a returning student, many years later, the staff and faculty made it easy to come back,” said Martin.

For 2023, Martin was named the student director on the SVU Board of Directors. In that role, Martin was responsible for writing articles for the national student newsletter, participating in strategic planning and attending the national conference. “I feel very fortunate to have been able to participate in this role,” Martin said. “It has been a great learning experience outside of the lab.”
In her nomination form, Julie Posey, chair of general and vascular sonography, wrote it was an honor to have Jennifer represent the College and future vascular sonographers in her SVU role.

In addition to serving on the SVU board, Martin was the class representative for the Vascular Sonography class of 2023 and is a Service Scholar. Through being a service scholar, Martin completed at least 40 service hours related to her degree.
Martin will graduate May 19 and plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree and give back to the community whenever she gets a chance.
