A student’s journey before attending college can vary in many ways, whether it’s public school, private school or homeschool. Lucy Ross, this year’s outstanding graduate in Food, Nutrition and Hospitality, was homeschooled until she enrolled at Owens Community College.

Ross was born in Chicago and moved to Toledo at a young age. Before enrolling at Owens, she was not sure what field she wanted to pursue. A friend told her that she would excel in the hospitality field. She did not want to attend a four-year university and knew several other homeschoolers who enrolled at Owens. She knew Owens and hospitality were the logical choice.

Throughout her time on campus, Ross will remember one place as her absolute favorite. “The atmosphere in the kitchens was my favorite part. The chefs who taught me were amazing and they really made Owens a great experience,” she said.

Ross had this message for her fellow graduates, saying “college was a big step but now we are launching into a world filled with adventure which can seem a little daunting. After our years at Owens, we are now prepared for whatever comes next.”

After graduation, Ross will travel to Lander, Wyoming to participate in an internship with COR Expeditions where she will lead backpack trips and share her love for her Catholic faith and the outdoors. She then plans to travel as much as possible.
