Being a name vs. a number, that’s one of the reasons why Melody Proehl continued her education at Owens Community College. This year, the Owens Community College Board of Trustees recognized her for extraordinary community engagement and volunteerism.

Proehl was a College Credit Plus (CCP) student while at Liberty-Benton High School. After graduation, she joined the United States Army for two years and then decided Owens was where she belonged, thanks to some guidance from her CCP English teacher, the late Fran Weith. She said when she was looking at universities, she would only have been a number; but at Owens, she could be herself and people would know her name.

Proehl, who is studying Dental Hygiene, started at the Findlay-area Campus and took classes to complete her degree at the Toledo-area Campus. Proehl is a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA) Student Chapter mentoring committee. With this, she helps guide and mentor others going through the program. “I could be myself at Owens and reach out to the community and available opportunities,” said Proehl.

Upon graduation in May 2022, Proehl will attend Bowling Green State University and continue her education in dental hygiene.
