The earliest memories of your life could be some of the most life-changing. For Sabrina Myers, this year’s Food, Nutrition and Hospitality Outstanding Graduate, her childhood memories of being in the kitchen with her mother and grandma inspired her to pursue a culinary career.

Myers graduated from Perkins High School in Sandusky in 2021. When looking for a college with a culinary program, she wanted to stay within driving distance of home. She knew Owens was the right choice and when she stepped into the kitchen, her instructors proved she made the right choice. “The instructors work with you, answer any questions you have and are patient,” she said. “They learn how you work and work with you to give you recipes that will help build your skills.”

Throughout her time at Owens, Myers was able to dive into the curriculum and activities in the culinary program. “Some of my favorite things I have gotten to do at Owens are creating a Halloween themed buffet for my catering class, creating an ice sculpture for my Garde Manger final service and making a wedding cake in my advanced baking and pastry class,” said Myers. Students in the culinary arts program also are involved at Terrace View Café where they get front of house and back of house experience in serving guests and cooking for a full restaurant.

In summer 2023, Myers was featured on The College Tour, an award-winning television series featuring colleges and universities nationwide. On the show, she talked about the culinary arts program and the unique program offering at the College.

After commencement, Myers will continue working as a chef at Catawba Island Club.
