Working together as a team while helping others and making an impact on the lives of patients was the inspiration for Taylor Smith to pursue a degree in Vascular Sonography. This July, Smith, a 2015 Summerfield High School graduate and Petersburg, MI resident, was awarded the Anne Jones Educational Scholarship from the Society for Vascular Ultrasound Foundation.

“I knew I wanted to be in healthcare helping others and working together as a team alongside other professionals to make an impact on the lives of patients,” said Smith. She added that her instructors and the positive atmosphere and learning environment have helped her succeed at Owens.

Through her time at Owens, Smith has been involved in Sound Professionals, an organization that gives students in Diagnostic Medical Sonography the opportunity to be involved in the community through volunteering and fundraising. “Using the skills I have acquired in my time at Owens through scanning and educational demonstrations has helped prepare me for real experiences,” said Smith. In the next five years, Smith sees herself having a career as a vascular sonographer and potentially teaching or training students.

The Anne Jones Educational Scholarship is awarded to four students nationally in accredited vascular ultrasound schools each year. Applicants must complete an essay with career objectives, including why they chose to study vascular ultrasound.
