Why Owens?

Academic Programs

Owens Community College offers excellent academic programs with more than 100 programs and majors. The most popular programs for international students are business, engineering, information technology, fine arts and chemistry. Most international students enroll in a university transfer program, in which they can complete the first two years of a Bachelor's degree at Owens, and then transfer to a university.

Toledo-area Campus

Owens Community College has state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories. The campus has wireless Internet access, a Performing Arts Center, a fitness center and gymnasium, a campus bookstore and a cafeteria. During International Education Week in 2013, the college dedicated an International Plaza, in which flags representing our international student body fly daily.

Student Body

More than 16,000 students, including approximately 100 full-time international students from 35 countries study annually at Owens Community College. Some of the countries represented at Owens include Saudi Arabia, China, South Korea, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, India, France, Germany, Russia, Cameroon, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Pakistan, among others.

University Transfer

At Owens, you can complete the first two years of a Bachelor's degree and then transfer to one of many area colleges and universities. Students work with an academic advisor to develop a transfer plan that includes general education classes and introductory classes for their major. Some of our partners are Bowling Green State University, Eastern Michigan University, Lourdes University, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, Ohio University, University of Cincinnati, University of Michigan and the University of Toledo.

Affordable

The tuition at Owens Community College is much more affordable than tuition at a university. We estimate that international students save between $15,000 and $37,000 in total tuition costs by attending Owens for two years and then transferring to a university. See Costs.

Admissions Requirements for New Full-Time F-1 and J-1 Visa Students

To apply for admission to Owens Community College, applicants must submit the following:

Financial Documents

There are several ways to meet the financial requirements for admissions.

  • Option A - Financial Certification Form plus bank statements providing evidence of financial support of $17,000 for each of three years
  • Option B - Financial Certification Form plus bank statements providing evidence of one year of support ($17,000) plus documentation showing that support will be attainable in the future years such as letters of salary/employment, investments, tax returns, etc.
  • Option C - Financial Guarantee from Saudi Arabian Culture Mission or other government scholarship

Proof of English Proficiency

There are several ways to meet the Proof of English Proficiency Requirement:

  • Option A - TOEFL Scores (minimum scores needed)
  • Option B - ESL Webcape Exam (minimum scores needed)
    • If you do not have TOEFL Scores, you can take the ESL Webcape Exam through the Owens testing center. We will provide information about how to take this test once you have completed the on-line application.
  • Option C - ESL Compass Exam (minimum scores needed)
    • If you are in the Toledo area, you can take the ESL Compass Exam at Owens Community College in place of submitting TOEFL scores

High School Transcripts, Translated into English

At a minimum, we will need a copy of your high school transcript. If you are in your senior year of high school, we will accept transcripts showing you are currently a high school senior. Once you graduate, we will need a copy of your complete high school transcripts.

College or University transcripts, if applicable, Translated in English

If you have attended a college or university, please also submit your transcripts. Transcripts should be official transcripts.

Costs

Tuition at Owens Community College for international students is much less expensive than tuition at most colleges and universities. Tuition for one semester is currently approximately $3,300 to $3,900, depending on the number of credits in which the student is registered. Tuition costs for a full academic year, or two semesters, range between $6,600 and $7,800, or higher, depending on the number of credits the student chooses. All international students are required to take at least 12 credit hours of courses each semester. Please click on the link below to view tuition costs and fees.

We estimate total costs for international students at $17,000. This amount includes tuition and fees, housing, food, transportation, and books. Actual costs will vary depending on various factors such as where the student chooses to live, number of credit hours in which the student enrolls, transportation needs, etc.

Completed applications and all supporting documents from international students transferring to Owens Community College from another college within the United States must be received by the following deadlines:

About Toledo, Ohio

Owens Community College is a two-year public college located in Toledo, Ohio, the seventh largest state in the United States. Toledo is the fourth largest city in the state of Ohio. It is located in the northwest part of the state, bordering the state of Michigan and Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes. With a population of 310,000, Toledo is a very manageable city.

The Toledo campus of Owens Community College is located in Perrysburg, Ohio, about a 10-minute drive from downtown Toledo. Our current international students live in various locations in Toledo and surrounding suburbs.

Toledo boasts a world-class art museum, and is also home to the Toledo Zoo, the Toledo Mud Hens, a minor league baseball team, and the Toledo Walleye, a minor league hockey team. The Peristyle is a concert hall and home of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. The city also offers opera and theatrical performances.

Residents of Toledo enjoy all four seasons. Summer is warm in Toledo. Winter can be cold, with snow!
