In the Owens Community College School of Nursing and Health Professions, the Peggy Bensman Award is one of the biggest awards at graduation. The award is named after the College’s first Nursing department chairperson and presented to a graduate to recognize academic achievement, community and professional leadership, to encourage high professional standards, and to strengthen the ideas and image of nursing.

This year’s recipient is Devon Powell, a Fostoria native.

Powell was homeschooled and received his GED in 2013. When it came time for his career, he had an idea of what he wanted to do for a while. “I wanted to feel like my job was important and had an impact on people’s lives,” he said.

Powell then enrolled at Owens Community College to pursue a nursing degree. He chose Owens due to its convenient location at the Findlay-area Campus. “I appreciate the smaller class size. I always feel like the teachers have time to answer any questions I have,” Powell said. He also noted the flexibility and variety of courses along with the cost as big factors to his success while enrolled.

After graduation, Powell will work at a local hospital with hopes to work in an emergency room or intensive care unit. “I look forward to seeing my classmates in the field as fellow nurses.”
