Owens Express Athletics have a deep history of success, including conference, district and national championships. This year, a former two-sport Express athlete, Hannah Owens, has been named a Barbara Rood award recipient.

Owens graduated from Eastwood High School in 2019 and played on the Express women’s basketball team that year. In the 2019-20 season, the Express made it to the NJCAA Region XII Championship Game and lost by a basket. After Express sports were postponed for a season due to the pandemic, Owens played on the Express softball team in 2020-21.

While playing both sports, Owens still had her eyes set on the future. “I have always loved helping others and knew from a young age I wanted to be a nurse just like my mom,” she said.

She chose to come to Owens due to its affordability, proximity to home and the nursing program, which has boasted NCLEX scores above the national average since 2014. Once in her program, she said others in the program helped propel her to success. “I cannot thank my fellow classmates enough for pushing me to be better and making the semesters fly by,” she said.

After graduation, Owens will pursue a job in a local emergency department.
