The community you grow up in can truly shape you as a person. For Hope Escalera, the Outstanding Criminal Justice Studies Graduate, she is pursuing a career in criminal justice to help families find peace and justice.

Escalera, a Woodward High School graduate, is a first-generation Latina graduate from Owens Community College. She said it’s important to show others the opportunities you have in life, “it’s an encouragement to show others, especially Latinos, no matter the obstacle or where our roots are from ‘sí, se puede! (yes, you can!)”

While at Owens, Escalera was in the Fast Track Program and said it truly helped her succeed, especially her coach, Lori Owens. “I don’t think she realizes the impact she has had on me since I joined Fast Track!” she said. The resources available while at Owens and the availability of faculty are also factors that helped Escalera, she said.

Escalera plans to obtain her bachelor’s in Mortuary Science at Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and receive her license in the death care industry. Her career goal is to become a medical examiner and funeral director.
