The journey to education looks different for everyone. For Kara McCloud, this year’s Outstanding Graduate in Criminal Justice Sciences, her journey took a few different steps. The Little Falls, Minnesota native originally started at a 4-year university and realized that was not the path for her. She then enlisted in the Army for four years. After she and her husband, a Fall 2021 Outstanding Graduate, got out of the Army, they moved to northwest Ohio and she enrolled at Owens.

During her time at Owens, McCloud became pregnant with her third child. “My professors were very accommodating and saw me as a real person. That’s what helped me succeed and grow,” said McCloud, adding that Owens gave her many options to be successful.

After graduation, she will study early childhood education at the University of Toledo.
