During a difficult time in your life, you want the most caring people by your side. For Krystle Posey, she always knew her calling was to help people. When a family member was in the hospital, the caring provided by nurses for that individual helped realize becoming a nurse would be her lifelong profession. “You don’t realize how important those people are until you go through it yourself,” she said.

Posey is the recipient of the nursing department’s Peggy Bensman Award this semester.

The mother of 2 said she chose Owens Community College because of the flexibility and the NCLEX pass rate, which Owens students have surpassed the state and national rate since 2014. In addition, when she came to orientation, it truly solidified her decision, “I looked around the room and saw many non-traditional students like me in all age groups and different paths of life.”

Posey, an Illinois native, said the nursing program is large but it doesn’t feel that way. She said the faculty availability and their day-to-day work as nurses helped her succeed. “You can talk with them about what’s happening in healthcare and the changing practices so you are ready to care for patients,” Posey said.

After graduation, Posey will enroll at the University of Toledo and begin a nursing residency program at ProMedica.
