Owens Community College students come from all walks of life such as students returning to further their education. La Donia Shaw, a Barbara Rood Award recipient, will graduate with her nursing degree after working in the field for more than two decades.
Shaw currently works as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Community Health and Wellness Center – Bryan Hospital. Her aspirations to work in the medical field started at a young age due to her grandfather’s heart issues.
Shaw originally wanted to be a cardiologist but then entered the nursing profession, first as a State Tested Nursing Assistant for 18 years before becoming an LPN. “Before going back to school, I got the chance to work at the Bryan Hospital in the Medical Surgical unit and float once a month to the ICU/Telemetry unit. I fell in love with critical care and cardiology all over again,” she said. “I feel like my passion has come full circle from a dream to reality.”
While at Owens, Shaw was a class representative in the Student Nursing Association and was a member and then secretary of Alpha Delta Nu, a nursing honor society.
After graduation, Shaw will continue working at the Bryan Hospital as an RN in the ICU/Telemetry unit.
