College is not just getting your degree and then starting your career. For others, like Phenique Lipkins, coming to Owens Community College was a way to further her career in nursing. This semester, Lipkins is a recipient of the Barbara Rood Student Choice Award.

The 2004 Scott High School graduate always wanted to be a nurse as a child. She started working in a nursing home at 14, became an STNA in high school and then an LPN. Years later, she developed an illness and was able to relate to those she had been caring for on a deeper level. “I felt like I was put on this Earth to be a nurse,” she said.

She wants to remind others that it’s never too late to achieve your dreams. “It doesn’t matter how long it takes to reach your dream, you will get there. Nothing great comes fast.”

After graduation, Lipkins plans to continue her education to further her career.
