The size of classes and personal connection to faculty are consistent reasons students choose to pursue their degrees at Owens. Haley Ansman, a Barbara Rood Student Choice Award recipient, would agree with that statement after transferring to the College in 2018.

Ansman, a Cardinal Stritch graduate, originally went to another university to pursue nursing but felt it was not personal enough and she would just be a number. She then transferred to Owens and her life changed. “My grades got better, my professors were great and knew me and cared about how I did,” she said. “I felt like I mattered and would make connections throughout my time.”

Her whole life, Ansman knew she would care for others for her career. It became a reality when those closest to her got sick. “I had to take care of my mom and grandpa when they were very ill,” she said. From that experience, she knew nursing was the right career path for her and got a job as an aide when she turned 18.

The Barbara Rood award is presented to nursing students while in their clinicals as a surprise. “When I saw everyone coming down the hall, I thought something was wrong. When they told me I won the award, I teared up and was so happy my class thought that I deserved this award,” said Ansman.

After graduation, Ansman will work with patients transitioning out of the intensive care unit at Mercy St. Vincent’s Hospital. After a few years, she is open to exploring opportunities as a travel nurse.
