In life, you may feel called to a different profession than you originally planned. That was the case for Veneta Blankenship, a Barbara Rood Student Choice Recipient.

Blankenship, a native of Bulgaria, came to the United States in 2005. When it came time to go to college, she earned a neuroscience and psychology degree from Baldwin Wallace University and was always interested in medical sciences. “I explored different occupations but eventually felt that nursing would be a great fit for me,” she said. “I love getting to know other people and the connections you build with patients as a nurse are so fulfilling.”

When researching where to pursue her nursing degree, Blankenship found Owens Community College. “I heard the nursing program here had a reputation for being well structured,” she said. She was also able to transfer credits from courses she had taken from her previous institution. “Owens provided the flexibility I needed as a student.”

Once on campus, Blankenship found the reputation of the program to be true. “The RN program is structured in a way that helps students really succeed in the clinical setting once we start working,” Blankenship said. While at Owens, she was able to interact with professors daily and felt comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. “I can truly say I feel prepared to start working as a nurse.”

After graduation, Blankenship will work at ProMedica Toledo Hospital as a registered nurse.
