When deciding on a career to pursue, consider your personal qualities and attributes.
Are you fascinated by the human heart and how it works? Do you thrive in high pressure situations? Are you a natural problem solver who is detail oriented? Do you like talking to people and contributing to a team? Are you good at multitasking?
With these personal and professional qualities, and a solid Owens educational foundation, you could find success in the rewarding and high-demand field of Cardiac Sonography.
As an integral and highly specialized member of the health care team, Cardiac Sonographers perform procedures that use high frequency sound waves to create images that aid in diagnosis of heart disease.
Cardiac Sonographers are committed to enhanced patient care and continuous improvement with ever-evolving technology.
A sonographer’s scope of practice includes operating imaging equipment, identifying normal and abnormal imaging results, preparing patients for procedures, and reviewing patient medical history.
Cardiac Sonographers often work in hospitals, physician offices, or clinics and may be required to take call.
To practice as a Cardiac Sonographer, graduates must pass national certification examinations through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
Program Details
As a student in Owens Cardiac Sonography program, you will learn how to manipulate a transducer and ultrasound machine settings to create sonographic images in our on-campus lab with equipment comparable to what you will find in area hospitals.
In the classroom, you will learn anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, medical terminology, patient care, ultrasound physics and diseases of the heart. The majority of your second year will be spent in clinic scanning real patients and learning from knowledgeable practicing sonographers.
Your Owens education will be guided by faculty members with extensive field experience, career knowledge and a passion for the profession.
Owens Cardiac Sonography program provides eligibility to sit for ARDMS or CCI national registries and a degree that is easily transferrable to other colleges and universities to earn a bachelor’s degree, if desired.
