Gamma Theta Upsilon

Gamma Theta Upsilon emblem

Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU) is an international honor society in geography. GTU was founded in 1928 and has chapters across the world. Our chapter at Owens is the Mu Rho chapter of GTU. We were founded on April 24, 2013 and were only the third community college to have a chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon at the time. Once a student becomes a member of GTU, they can join any GTU chapter, including those at four-year institutions.

To be eligible for membership in Gamma Theta Upsilon, students must complete at least 3 Geography courses, have a 3.3 GPA or higher in Geography, and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. When students join, they pay a $40 membership fee which gives them lifetime membership in GTU. They also receive a certificate, membership card, and in the past the department has bought them cords to wear at graduation.
