Health Requirements
Documentation of the following must be submitted to the electronic documentation system by the required deadline. Failure to submit the documentation by the deadline will result in a student being denied access to clinical rotations. All health requirement costs are the responsibility of the student.
- Physical examination – Yearly
- Tuberculosis Testing – Yearly
- Flu Vaccination – Yearly
- Tetanus/Diphtheria – Booster required every ten years.
- Hepatitis B Immunity – May require dates of immunizations.

CPR
All students must be certified in CPR through the American Heart Association (AHA) – Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
Nurse Assistant Training Course
STN 110, or STN 290 must be completed within five (5) years of the beginning of the first clinical course. Documentation noting successful completion must be submitted to the Program. Students who are currently working in the role of a State Tested Nurse Assistant (STNA) may submit a letter of verification from their current employer detailing their job responsibilities for review.
Background Checks Requirements
All students entering the MRI program are required to have completed a background check through the Department of Public Safety at Owens Community College. Students will be required to have additional background checks throughout their enrollment in the program. Students will be notified when it is time to complete this requirement.
Any student who has a conviction should complete the pre-application review process as the ARRT indicates below.
The department administrator at the clinical affiliates may be contacted regarding a conviction. The clinical affiliate reserves the right to accept or refuse the student. Depending on the results, clinical placement may not be possible, even if the ARRT clears the student for credentialing purposes.
Background checks by the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are required. The student assumes the cost of the background checks.

Precertification Review
Use the ethics review preapplication if you’ve faced:
- Misdemeanor or felony charges or convictions
- Military courts-martial
- Disciplinary actions taken by a state or federal regulatory authority or certification board
- Serious honor code (academic) violations as described in our Rules of Ethics, such as patient abuse, violating patient confidentiality, and cheating. You don’t have to report offenses such as poor grades or falling asleep in class.
Complete the ethics review preapplication form, and submit it along with the necessary documentation and nonrefundable fee. Use the criminal violation checklist, regulatory agency violation checklist, or honor code violation checklist to ensure you’re sending all required information.
An ethics review can take a significant amount of time—sometimes three months or more. If you’re concerned about meeting the ethics requirement, we recommend you request an ethics review preapplication before or shortly after you enter an education program.
Once we receive your submission, the Ethics Committee will review it and make a decision.
Clinical Experience
Clinical Environment
MRI Technologists provide services that require touching patients for positioning purposes and performing venipuncture. This environment puts them in contact with blood and body fluids. Diseases may be encountered in this type of environment. However, research shows that risks are negligible when appropriate infection control procedure/barrier techniques are used. Upon entering the program, there is training to meet the protocol for a hazard-free, safe learning environment.
Clinical Affiliates
This program is offered in cooperation with many MRI departments. The use of multiple clinical sites provides equity in clinical education as students have the opportunity to utilize many types of MRI equipment and to participate in a wide variety of MRI procedures.
Students are required to complete five eight-week courses of clinical education. Students should note that there may be travel requirements of up to or more than 60 miles from the Owens Community College Toledo-area Campus or their home for their clinical site rotations.

Grades
Approximately every four weeks, students will be provided a copy of their grade summary or grades may be viewed in Blackboard. Students with a grade average of 79 or less will be counseled by the appropriate faculty member. In addition to the 2.0 G.P.A. required for graduation, students in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging programs must earn a minimum grade of “C” in all program courses.
All lecture and lab grades will be determined by the college faculty. Clinical grades will be determined in conjunction with the clinical coordinators and clinical instructor(s) from each clinical affiliate.
Students must earn a passing grade of 76% or higher in both the lecture and laboratory components of the course. If either of the percentages earned is less than 76%, the student will earn a grade of “D or F” for the course and be removed from the program.
The grading scale for the program courses are: | |||
